<p>Cholesterol often gives everyone the wrong impression that it is all bad, but if we took the time to understand just exactly what is cholesterol, then we will be able to understand our cholesterol readings that we get from our doctor.  Cholesterol can be good because it assists our bodies function properly and it can be harmful as well by clogging up our arteries.  Understanding the distinction between the two will help us better able to manage our diet to lower cholesterol.</p>
<p>First, the good cholesterol has also known as HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein).  This cholesterol is good in high amounts as it helps keeps our body and cell walls in good shape by carrying away the cholesterol from our arteries and heart and flushes them out of our system.</p>
<p>Then we have the bad cholesterol, which is also know as LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein).  This cholesterol is bad, especially when we have large quantities in our bodies.  Its main job is to slowly build up in our arteries which eventually clogs them up and can cause us to experience a heart attack and possibly a stroke.</p>
<p>This is the reason why it is exceedingly important that you get a hold of a cholesterol reading to make sure that your cholesterol levels rest within the target range.  When you acquire your reading there are three things you need to look at:  HDL cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol levels, and total cholesterol levels.</p>
<p>Knowing the normal cholesterol numbers will help you learn when you need to start taking some action against your cholesterol.  Your total cholesterol reading should be below 200.  If it reaches 140, this can be very dangerous.  Your LDL cholesterol should be below 130.  If it reaches 160, then you need to start adjusting your diet to lower cholesterol.  Your HDL cholesterol readings should be above 45.  You should be concerned if it falls below 40.</p>
<p>To have your cholesterol assessed, you will want to visit your doctor and inform him you want to check your cholesterol levels.  When you get the results, the doctor will either inform you that you are fine and within the target range, that you should consider starting on a diet to lower cholesterol, or that you should begin taking medication.</p>
<p>Once you learn the difference between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol it is easier to understand what the doctor is talking about when you go and get a cholesterol reading.  You want more HDL cholesterol and less LDL cholesterol.  Knowing the test results will help you determine if you need to be on medication or if you can just control it with a diet to lower cholesterol.</p>

If you have either of these or both, you should think about starting a diet to lower cholesterol that will help you in reducing cholesterol.</p>
<p>There is an easier way to keep your cholesterol levels low besides taking drugs that are geared towards reducing cholesterol.  The easiest way to stay off cholesterol medication is to not smoke, drink alcohol in moderation, and make sure your get plenty of exercise.  If you have any high risk  factors for getting high cholesterol levels, like a parent or grandparent who already has it, then you should start implementing these easy tasks into your life right now.</p>
<p>Maintaining a low cholesterol level is very important to your health because it can help prevent any future heart problems.  By adding the three changes mentioned above to your daily schedule along with the three items mentioned below, you can be well on your way to maintaining low cholesterol levels.</p>
<p>One way of lowering your cholesterol is to start your day off with a nutritious breakfast filled with fiber.  Studies have shown that the best way of reducing cholesterol levels is to eat a breakfast with at least 10 grams of fiber.  A great meal that has the fiber you need which you can eat in the morning is oatmeal.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t really like oatmeal or need a variety in your morning meals, you can also find some cold cereal that has the fiber you need.  You can also add some produce to your meals to spice up the taste like bananas and apples.  Kellogg&#8217;s Special K Red Berries cereal is one of my favorite breakfast meals.</p>
<p>Another change to make your daily diet to lower cholesterol is to swap your oils you cook with to olive oil.  Olive oil is known as the best vegetable oil on the market and is a much better option to improve your health than other vegetable oils.  All you need is two tablespoons of olive oil daily to help lower your bad cholesterol while keeping your good cholesterol normal.</p>
<p>Adding some walnuts to your daily diet is another way to help your body get rid of the bad cholesterol.  Studies have shown that you can lower your cholesterol levels in four weeks just be eating some walnuts on a daily basis.  Walnuts not only help lower your cholesterol, they also help keep your blood vessels in good shape.</p>
<p>If you currently suffer from a high cholesterol level or have relatives who have a history of high cholesterol, then you should try to start reducing cholesterol levels now.  Lowering your cholesterol can be a simple as making a few changes in your diet to lower cholesterol.  You can start eating a breakfast filled with fiber, start using olive oil, and start eating a daily dose of walnuts.  Just making these small changes will help keep your cholesterol low and provide you a healthier lifestyle.</p>

<p>A healthy diet plan for diabetics has very strict composition - it must have 50% starch, 20% fat and 30% protein. Since the composition should be so exact, diabetic food must be prepared very precisely, with a great deal of attention given to exact measurements.</p>
<p>You will have to pass up on some of the food stuff that you like, like fried foods. Instead, you will have to focus on baked, steamed, boiled and broiled foods when you are on your healthy eating plan. Snacking between meals is not allowed either - and you must make sure that you never miss meals, because that can affect your metabolism.</p>
<p>Fruits and vegetables are ideal for your diabetes diet plan, but you have to ensure that they are fresh. Frozen foods have preservatives that include sugary and fatty chemicals. You will need dairy intake, but you have to stick to skimmed milk - whole milk products and confectionery items, as well as sweet desserts, are things you will have to learn to do without.</p>
<p>Binges out on the town are out of the picture, too, when you are on your diabetic eating plan. Alcohol should be strictly avoided. Red meat, mayonnaise, eggs and other foods that are high in cholesterol and fat content should be avoided as far as possible too. Fizzy drinks, sauces and dressings and bottled juice are other items you must try and avoid. What you should aim at is a daily intake of around 1800 calories. This means that your daily diet must be carefully planned.</p>
<p>The simplest and most nutritious diabetes diet plan for a single day can include a breakfast containing 2/3 cup of apple juice,  cup of oatmeal, 1 slice of wholemeal bread toast, 1 soft cooked egg and 1 cup unsweetened skimmed milk. Lunch can be  cup of tuna, 2 slices of wholemeal bread,  cup diced tomatoes, 1 cup mixed fruit, 1 tsp margarine and 1 glass lemon tea. The ideal dinner meal would be 3 ounces of baked chicken,  cup of mashed potatoes, 1 slice of wholemeal bread, 1 cup broccoli or tossed salad. Try not to use store-bought salad dressing. Instead, use a 1tsp of olive oil mixed with some vinegar mixed in chopped garlic and parsley/basil/sage or oregano to add flavor.</p>
<p>So making the right diabetes diet plan is not easy - you have to know what nutrition your body needs and you have to understand your metabolism. With your doctor, you can make your own diet plan to keep diabetes away, which will be tasty, healthy and a pleasure to follow.</p>

<p>The Salad Nicoise is more commonly called a Nicoise Salad and is pronounced &#8220;Ni-suaz&#8221;.  This particular salad originally comes from a region in the South of France called Nice and involves a number of different raw ingredients the details of which will provided for you later on in this article.  Most authentic Salad Nicoise&#8217;s use only raw ingredients there are some restaurants who make this salad and will include rice, pasta, potatoes, cheese and cooked vegetables in theirs.</p>
<p>The real beauty of this particular salad over many others you may have tried is in the way that it is presented.  It is not only full of color and texture but flavor as well because of the ingredients that are used. Below we now provide you with details of the ingredients along with the steps that you will need to take in order to produce a great tasting and looking Nicoise Salad.</p>
<p>The ingredients you will need in order to make a Salad Nicoise to serve four people are as follows:- 1.  10 large and ripe tomatoes 2.  1 clove of garlic 3.  1 large cucumber 4.  1 green and one red pepper 5.  6 spring onions 6.  12 anchovy fillets which are in olive oil 7.  125g of black olives 8.  4 eggs that have been hard boiled 9.  90ml of olive oil (extra virgin is best) 10. 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar 11. Juice of one lemon 12.  Assorted salad leaves (cos, rocket etc) plus a small amount of fresh Basil. Now let us go through the steps you will need to take in order to make your Salad Nicoise.</p>
<p>Step 1 - You should take the tomatoes and cut them into six pieces each and then put this on a dish before sprinkling with a little salt.  Doing this will help to remove some of the excess juices in the tomatoes which could cause the salad to become soggy and limp.  Whilst you are preparing the tomatoes it is good idea to also get the eggs ready.  In order to get good hard boiled eggs you should aim to leave them in the boiling water for around 5 minutes.</p>
<p>Step 2 - Now take the cucumber and cut this in half along the entire length of it.  Once cut in half you now need to scoop out as many of the seeds inside then you can slice up the cucumber.  However you should not either peel the cucumber of slice it too thinly.  Then after preparing the cucumber you can move on to preparing the peppers and the spring onions.  Both of the peppers and spring onions should be very thinly sliced.</p>
<p>Step 3 - Now you need to take the garlic clove and remove the out skin and then cut it in half.  Take the two halves of the garlic clove and rub them around the inside of the bowl or bowls into which the salad is going to be placed.  Preferably use bowls which are made from wood as they are better able to hold the flavor and scent of the garlic.</p>
<p>Step 4 - As soon as you are ready to serve the salad, take your salad leave and lay these over the base of the bowl.  The tomatoes that you left to drain can now be used and laid on top of the leaves along with the hard boiled eggs, which have been cut, into quarters.  Then onto this, you need to place the peppers, spring onions and cucumber, as well as the anchovy fillets, which should have been drained.  Then over the top, you scatter the olives.</p>
<p>Step 5 - The final step you need to take in order to make a great tasting Salad Nicoise is to prepare the dressing.  So into a jug or jar place the olive oil, red wine vinegar and lemon juice and blend well together and also season it with a little freshly ground black pepper and salt.  Once combined you just very gently drizzle this dressing over the top of the salad and before taking to the table to serve roughly tear up some of the basil leaves and scatter these over the top of it.  Now take it to the table and enjoy.</p>

<p>Diabetes can be difficult to live with, but with the right diet and proper exercise, it can be controlled. While designing the right diet, it is essential to keep in mind the foods diabetic people can eat. There are plenty of recipes that are aimed at preparing delicious and healthy foods for diabetics.</p>
<p>Type I Diabetes is mostly seen in children, but it&#8217;s no longer believed to be affecting just them. It&#8217;s an autoimmune disease, which is caused by damaged insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. In comparison,  Type II Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, where the body is insulin resistant or deficient. Common foods recommended in a diabetic diet include fibrous, sugar-free and fat-free varieties.</p>
<p>Diabetes is, unfortunately, hereditary. However, if you watch what you eat and exercise properly, you can stave off diabetes, even if there are people in your family who have it. Once you do have diabetes, though, you will have to regularly take medicine that regulates the insulin level of your body. One other way to control diabetes that doctors frequently recommend is that you should be careful to eat foods that are highly nutritious and watch your diet.</p>
<p>You also have to make sure that you stay active - some kind of activity that you enjoy, whether it is walking, or dancing, or jogging - should be taken up and stuck to, for at least half an hour each day. You should also make sure that your diet is designed with healthy alternatives to your regular eating habits, and avoids things like sweets, high-fat foods and alcohol.</p>
<p>There are plenty of foods for the diabetic person and these must be included in their daily diet. The nutritional requirements of the body must be met - proteins, minerals, vitamins, fibrous carbohydrates and lots of water are essential. The fibrous carbs can come from excellent sources like wholemeal bread, whole grains and oats. Lean meat, legumes, seeds, nuts and fish are great sources of protein, and minerals and vitamins are both taken care of by fresh fruits and green, leafy vegetables. Plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day, is also necessary.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, sauces like sweet and sour, barbecue and teriyaki are not among the foods diabetics are allowed to eat - restaurant prepared and store-bought creams and sauces must also be avoided.</p>
<p>Other items that most emphatically are not foods diabetic people can eat are red meat, cheese, butter, carbonated drinks, eggs and mayonnaise. Unsaturated fats and unsweetened foods must be opted for, instead. Once you are diagnosed with diabetes, you have a responsibility to yourself and to those who care for you to stay healthy. It is essential to talk to a nutritionist or to your doctor, understand the foods you can eat, and design a diet you can follow as a long-term plan.</p>

<p>When you are purchasing fish at the supermarket or farmer&#8217;s market, make sure you examine the fish thoroughly. Remember that fresh fish and shellfish do not have a smell at all; if your fish smells fishy or oily, put it back. You will notice that the eyes on a fresh fish are clear and bulge out a little; fish that have sat for a while have sunken eyes. Similarly, make sure that the flesh around the eyes is not brown or yellow. The flesh of the fish should be shiny and firm and the gills should be free of any discharge.</p>
<p>When you are shopping, make sure the fish counter is the last place you visit. The less time your fish has to spend at room temperature, the better. You can ask the cashier to double-bag the fish and package it away from other foods. This ensures the juices of the fish do not spill out and contaminate other food items.</p>
<p>While you are preparing your seafood of choice at home, remember to keep the cutting board and knives that you use on your fish away from your vegetables unless you have washed them with hot, soapy water; some people even keep completely different sets of kitchen goods for vegetables and meat to avoid contamination.</p>
<p>Do not put cooked food onto an unwashed pate that has held meat, poultry, or fish, due to the fact that bacteria can contaminate the cooked food. Similarly, the use of a food thermometer can tell you with 100% accuracy whether or not the food is safe to eat; this is actually something that is nearly impossible to eyeball.</p>
<p>When you are thinking of seafood safety, the question of raw seafood, whether you are thinking of Japanese sushi or raw oysters on the half shell, will come up. It is important to remember that no matter how professional the presentation is; there is still an inherent risk. Pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and people who have liver disorders are at a higher risk for these problems. Make your choices while being aware of the facts.</p>

<p>As the name implies, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a type of arthritis that primarily affects the young. Children as young as six months can be diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. In the United States, approximately 75,000 young people have this debilitating condition.</p>
<p>However, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis too, affects different children differently, and not all children may experience all these symptoms. Even the degree of severity of a particular symptom may vary from children to children. Even in the case of the same child, the symptoms may vary from one day to another.</p>
<p>Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a collective disease. The three identified forms are pauciarticular, polyarticular and systemic. In pouciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a child may suffer from inflammation in few joints such as the knee and shoulder. If it is polyarticular, then many joints get inflamed simultaneously, for example knees, wrists, elbows, and so on. Polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis attacks symmetrically; for example, the joints of the left and right hand become inflammation at the same time.</p>
<p>Unlike pauciarticular and polyarticular, in systemic cases, parts of the body become affected along with the inflammation of some organs. Skin rashes, fever, inflammation of the joints and internal organs such as the spleen and liver may accompany systemic disease.</p>
<p>Pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis affects a few joints, as little as four, or less. Half the children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis have this type of arthritis, and usually the joints of the knees, ankles, and elbows are affected. Joints of the wrists, spine and finger or toe joints are rarely, if at all, affected. It normally affects joints on one side of the body and not both sides.</p>
<p>Polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis affects five joints or more. It affects the girls more than boys, and mainly teenagers. This type normally affects the hands and the finger joints, but can also affect the neck, jaw, hips, knees, and ankles. If affecting the spine, the child may find it difficult to turn the head due to stiffness in the neck.</p>
<p>Treatment for this difficult condition is possible through therapy and medication. The first step for treatment is to contact your doctor or physician. Juvenile arthritis is specifically delicate as it involves children, so communication becomes an issue, and it is always better to be cautious if any symptoms present themselves. Early diagnosis is the key to treatment, so if your child complains of any possible symptom, take them to your doctor/physician ASAP. It will be better to preferably rule out juvenile arthritis earlier as a cause for your child&#8217;s symptoms.</p>

<p>NRDC (the National Resource Defense Council) which is an international non-profit environmental organization conducted an extensive independent test on 14 commonly used air fresheners. The NRDC discovered phthalates were in 86 percent (12 of 14) of air freshener products tested, including those marketed as &#8220;all-natural&#8221; or &#8220;unscented&#8221;. It was noted that none of the products tested listed phthalates on their labels. The NRDC recommends that government regulators should follow up by doing more thorough tests on these products and enact basic measures to limit exposure to these chemicals, in the interest of public health. Meanwhile, it may be prudent to avoid prolonged and frequent exposure to air fresheners. Extreme precaution should be used when using air fresheners in places where children and pregnant women are likely to frequent</p>
<p>Bad odours are generally undesirable in any indoor facility. Odours do not cause toxicological effects by themsleves.  But they may increase the reporting of symptoms (for example, headache, nausea, eye and throat irritation).</p>
<p>Sadly, the increased popularity of air fresheners has quickly surpassed awareness of the potential health concerns from exposure to the toxic chemicals they may contain. Nearly all phthalates are known to interfere with production of the male hormone, testosterone.  They have also been associated with reproductive abnormalities. Various animal studies have linked prenatal exposure to certain phthalates with decreases in testosterone, malformations of the genitalia, and reduced sperm production. Human studies have also shown that phthalates have been connected with changes in hormone levels, poor semen quality, and changes in genital development. Five phthalates-which includes one found in air freshener products-are posted by the State of California as chemicals &#8220;known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.&#8221; Phthalate exposure in a building environment has also been associated with allergic symptoms and asthma. Because there are no labelling requirements, even so called &#8220;natural&#8221; products can contain toxic chemicals. It seems virtually impossible for the common person to know which products may pose a risk.</p>
<p>While the spotlight here is on the presence of phthalates in air fresheners, it is worthwhile mentioning that researchers have detected other chemicals of concern to human health in these products also. The European Consumers&#8217; Organisation, BEUC (Bureau Europen des Consommateurs), commissioned a study in January 2005 to analyse the chemical substances present in indoor air following the use of air fresheners (including incense, natural products, scented candles, aerosols, gels, liquid and electric diffusers.  The BEUC research found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in these air freshener products at high levels.  It was concluded that VOCs significantly contributed to indoor air pollution. Specifically, the European study discovered cancer-causing chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene in some air fresheners. Benzene has been shown to cause leukemia in humans. Formaldehyde has been linked to a variety of cancers of the upper airways. Most of these products also contained allergens (like as limonene). Susceptible people with allergies to these ingredients could have adverse reactions, which includes rashes or even asthma attacks, from exposure to air freshener products.</p>
<p>Air fresheners are rarely necessary simply because they cannot substitute for good ventilation. The best solution is to open windows to bring in fresh air or to use fans to maintain proper air circulation. Air fresheners also are not the solution to poor air quality; they mask bad odours, however they very almost never eliminate their cause.</p>
<p>Any one should avoid using air fresheners if possible, but when necessary, use products with the lowest levels of phthalates to limit exposure to these toxic chemicals, or use natural products that are certified by organizations such as EcoLogo (Canada) and Green Seal (USA) as being an environmentally responsible product.</p>
<p>Please remember this.  Until manufacturers are compelled to fully disclose all ingredients on product labels, each and every breath you inhale fumes released by air fresheners. The risk of developing a health problem far outweighs any perceived benefit of using these common household products.</p>
